Description
Lightning Ridge, known famously by locals and miners as ‘The Ridge’, is a small town in north-western New South Wales, Australia. The town and its surrounds are synonymous with black opals, which are mined in the district. While originally settled as a pastoral region, by the early 20th Century, Lightning Ridge was regarded the world’s black opal capital. The Ridge itself is a sandstone formation which lay as a shallow seabed during the Cretaceous Period and was heavily populated with a vast array of small ancient mammals, whose fossilised remains have opalised over the past hundred or so million years and are today unearthed and polished up as some of the finest opal specimens on the planet.
This Lightning Ridge Black Opal Raw Silk jacket draws inspiration from the brighter spectrum of intense opal tones seen in the gems which the area has built its reputation on. As with the gems, this jacket is to be worn on display!
DRESS IT UP: This jacket will not assist you hiding in the shade, it’s loud and proud. Pair it with white trousers or chinos and a bright pink shirt.
DRESS IT DOWN: Simply with blue denim or chinos and a white T-Shirt. You’ll still stand out, only less.
FUN FACT: When Paul Hogan (Mick ‘Crocodile’ Dundee) first made his celebrity, he claimed to be from Lightning Ridge. While this helped drive tourism to the town, it is in fact untrue. Hogan is actually from Sydney.
